Liver Failure In Cats
Cholangitis, and hepatic lipidosis, the two most common types of feline liver disease, can lead to liver failure if not treated on time.
Cholangitis is an inflammation of the bile ducts and is associated with feline leukemia virus and feline infectious peritonitis. The conventional regimen of treatment includes antibiotics, appetite stimulants, steroids and other immunosuppressive drugs.
Hepatic lipidosis, or fatty liver disease, consists of abnormal levels of certain fats that accumulate near the liver. It is an idiopathic disease (a disease whose exact cause is not known) is mostly associated with loss of appetite and obesity. The tension, is also known for being one of the factors leading to loss of appetite.
Cats usually find it difficult to adjust to a changed environment and the move to a new home or arrival of a new kitten. Are in tension even when the owner is in tension. There are chances of the occurrence of fatty liver disease due to cholangitis, inflammation of the pancreas and liver tumor. As in many other health conditions, prevention is better than cure. Consider herbal supplements and natural remedies to support liver health. There is also natural remedies for pets that help reduce stress and anxiety and help with weight management .
The accurate diagnosis of a disease for dogs and cats liver is with a biopsy. Cats with fatty liver disease is an anesthetic risk and a sample is usually collected with the help of a fine needle percutaneous or laparoscopic. Hepatic lipidosis needs to be addressed immediately to prevent liver failure. Severe cases require hospitalization and critical care. Cat owners prefer outpatient care, but it requires perseverance and desire to succeed, as there is no specific home remedies that will cure the disease.
Above all, the first item on the agenda should be to modify your cat's diet. Although the veterinarian is the right person to suggest the change, choose a high protein diet with high calorie intake originating from non-protein sources. Consult your veterinarian also for the amount and frequency of feeding.
Symptoms of liver disease in cats and dogs are often difficult to pin point. In most cases, the disease is diagnosed late. Vomiting may prove to be a serious problem if fatty liver disease has progressed to advanced. It may require surgical insertion of tubes in the stomach for feeding and home care. Make food gruel consistency and force it down through the tube. You can add some fish oil to food. Start with small amounts every four hours and gradually increase and decrease the frequency.
Although 36 cc of food are enough to sustain life in the cat, would require more than that to help grow and cure. For liquids administered initially you may need the help of a veterinarian, but if you try hard enough, you can learn and do it yourself.
The prognosis of both conditions is reserved, but only with continued careful and regular monitoring. Other home care you can try is to give the cat attention and love for a couple of hours. If the cat is rejecting the food due to stress, help in the treatment of anorexia, considered to be the primary cause behind the failure of the liver in cats.
