April 23, World Book and Copyright Day

That day of the year 1616 died Cervantes, Shakespeare and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega. The date also marks the birth, or death of eminent writers such as Maurice Druon, K. Laxness, Vladimir Nabokov, Josep Pla and Manuel Mejía Vallejo.

This is the reason why this date so symbolic for literature has been chosen by UNESCO to the world pay tribute to books and their authors, and promote, particularly among young people, the pleasure of reading and respect for the irreplaceable contributions of artists to social progress and cultural development.

The idea for this celebration originated in Catalonia where it coincides with the day of Sant Jordi and it is tradition to offer a rose with the purchase of a book. Throughout Spain Book Day is celebrated on April 23 since 1926 and has internationalized UNESCO in 1996. As we celebrate this day throughout the world, UNESCO seeks to promote reading, publishing and the protection of intellectual property through copyright. New technologies far from over with books, in addition to promoting reading with new products like electronic books or the possibility of using the Nintendo DS portable player cone.

This year will be remembered with pride two great writers who have left us recently, Miguel Delibes and JD Salinger, whose books are among the best sellers because of the number of readers as a tribute been interested in his works.

From here we wish you a happy day the book and whatever your favorite genre, happy reading!
